DR. MARK BREINER: Most people today have some form of periodontal disease. And periodontal disease can just be simple inflammation in the gum tissue, which is easily reversible, all the way to something called periodontitis which is very severe bone loss. And you can ultimately lose your teeth. But even worse than that is that, is chronic infection, 'cause bacteria can go out into your whole system. And today it's recognized, the close link between periodontal disease and heart disease. There's increased stroke, if you have periodontal disease; there's increased premature births, low birth weight babies.

So, yes, the mouth is directly related to the rest of the body, and this shows up very much when a person has periodontal disease. So it becomes very important to treat this. And it becomes very important to use a microscope, so that you can take a plaque sample from under the gum, look at it, and see indeed if there's an ongoing problem with bacteria and amoeba, and something that must be taken care of.
